Course Introduction

This course addresses Applied Design Technologies by introducing the theory and knowledge of graphic design production for website development. You will learn how to design and edit graphics and imagery and devise layouts for the web. You will also gain a comprehensive understanding of the different types of graphic formats and develop hands-on techniques with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

The course will also cover design theory and ideation techniques to help you generate ideas so you can effectively articulate your design decisions to others in your team. 

Through Digital Skills Academy’s experiential learning approach, you’ll also have an opportunity to apply and embed your new skills whilst on the course.

This course will introduce you to the art and techniques of Applied Design Technologies and help you stand out in a dynamic and cutting-edge specialist field.

On completion of this course, you will have covered:

  • How to apply ideation techniques
  • How to apply graphic production techniques
  • Key design theories – typography, colour theory, Getstalt Principles, layout and semiotics
  • How to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create and edit bitmap graphics
  • How to articulate design decisions
  • Understanding effective visual design
  • Intermediate to advanced Photoshop and Illustrator skills
  • Knowledge of current design trends

On completion of this course, you will have created marketing collateral and UI elements for a fictional start-up.

As part of our application process, you will take a simple, online suitability assessment for your chosen course. Based on your answers, this will confirm that you have the skills and experience required for a successful outcome.

7 hours (comprising a weekly average of 3.5 taught hours plus 3.5 additional hours on average for self-study, research and group work)

You will be given a number of course-specific assignments that both reinforce the learning and give you work-based experience of applying your new skills. All assignments are subject to a rigorous assessment framework. Specific assessments for this course include a weekly quiz and a logo and banner assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator?

While there are other, very capable graphic editing applications, the Adobe applications are cross-platform (Windows and OSX). Furthermore, there are still very much the industry standard and proficiency in them is still assumed by prospective employers.

All the step by step activities are based around Photoshop and Illustrator and all assignment deliverables are requested in these file formats.

What version of Adobe applications should I use?

It's recommended that you use the latest version of the applications.

Even though some features and menus may have changed, participants can use older versions of the software if they already have a copy.
