The Big Data Visualisation course enables participants to design, analyse and present data in pictorial or graphical formats. Taught by an industry expert lecturer, the course provides participants with an in-depth understanding of statistics, strategic narratives and visual design to educate, influence and engage customers.

Participants look at the future of Big Data Visualisation by understanding its history, building designs, interpreting data sets, and developing visualisation techniques with JavaScript frameworks.

As part of our application process, participants will take a simple, online suitability assessment for their chosen course. Based on their answers, this will confirm that participants have the skills and experience required for a successful outcome.

11 hours (comprising a weekly average of 5.5 taught hours plus 5.5 additional hours on average for self-study, research and group work)

Participants will be given a number of course-specific assignments that both reinforce the learning and provide work-based experience of applying new skills. All assignments are subject to a rigorous assessment framework. Assessments for this specific course include a weekly quiz, low and hi-fi wireframes, a prototype and a video.

How much existing knowledge of data visualisation do I require?

We assume that participants have no prior knowledge of either design or data visualisation. The course is ideal as a practical introduction but also includes tips and insights to someone who wants to build on their existing experience.

Do I need any specialist software?

Participants will be provided with licences for Tableau and InVision for the duration of the course, powerful data visualisation applications that will enable them to create insightful and impressive visualisations without coding.

How technical does it get?

Although no prior knowledge is assumed, the technical content increases towards the end of the course, when we tackle D3.js. The purpose here is to allow participants to get acquainted with a widely popular library. Through those units we will explain front-end web development concepts on the assumption that participants have no prior knowledge in this field.
