Course Introduction

This course builds on the knowledge gained in the Applied Design Technologies Part I course and addresses graphic design production for the web and mobile devices. Participants will learn advanced design techniques for graphics and imagery for such devices and understand how to devise layouts for responsive websites, social media and mobile applications.  
Participants will gain in-depth knowledge regarding graphic formats, learn advanced features of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and work with wire framing applications used to design for the web and mobile devices. As in Applied Design Technologies Part I, this course covers ideation techniques to help participants generate new ideas and make informed and well-articulated design choices.

On completion of this course, participants will have covered:

  • How to create layouts and graphic collateral for responsive websites, social media and mobile applications

  • How to apply font foundries, colour schemes and other stock library resources in a practical design-driven way
  • How to work with key graphic outputs including JPG, PNG, SVC in the right context

  • Understanding effective visual design
  • Intermediate to advanced Photoshop and Illustrator skills
  • Knowledge of current design trends

On completion of this course, participants will have created marketing collateral and UI elements for a fictional start-up.

Participants must have successfully completed the "Applied Design Technologies Part I" Online Short Course.

As part of our application process, participants will take a simple, online suitability assessment for their chosen course. Based on their answers, this will confirm that participants have the skills and experience required for a successful outcome.

10 hours (comprising a weekly average of 5 taught hours plus 5 additional hours on average for self-study, research and group work)

Participants will be given a number of course-specific assignments that both reinforce the learning and provide work-based experience of applying new skills. All assignments are subject to a rigorous assessment framework. Specific assessments for this course include a weekly quiz and a site and app design assignment.

Do I have to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator?

While there are other, very capable graphic editing applications, the Adobe applications are cross-platform (Windows and OSX). Furthermore, there are still very much the industry standard and proficiency in them is still assumed by prospective employers.

All the step by step activities are based around Photoshop and Illustrator and all assignment deliverables are requested in these file formats.

What version of Adobe applications should I use?

It's recommended that you use the latest version of the applications.

Even though some features and menus may have changed, participants can use older versions of the software if they already have a copy.
